Family pictures

From Christmas 2008 at home and at Larry and Flicka's

From Christmas 2008 with mom

Aren't the big family group pictures at Christmas always so fun. Trying to get everyone to smile and be looking at the camera at the same time. And it always seems like one of the little kids either is crying or doesn't want to look at the camera or be in the picture. But after all the agony of trying to get the shot, it is usually worth it. The reality is that for that moment, everyone was there and that may not be the case next year. So as hard as they always are to take and as much as everyone frowns when it comes to having to take them, they are always worth it in the end

Its going to be even more fun this year because Denise just got past the learning part on the last trip and will be able to have alot more fun now. Great friends and Great fun, another blessing God has given us.

Being thankful

From Denise Cozumel

This time of year really makes me start thinking about all the things I am thankful for.
1. My wonderful and amazing wife (that's a given but I take her for granted more than I should)
2. My healthy 10 year old son (that keeps me on my toes)
3. My parents (the fact that I still have both of them here with me)
4. The great friends we have (that we actually enjoy doing stuff with and hanging out with)
5. My church family (fuelchurch is just awesome!!)
6. GOD's grace (enough said)
7. My 2 brothers that live fairly close and that we have great relationships with each other
8. My inlaws (I am so blest in this area, they are the best)
9. GOD's blessing upon my business
10. Having employees that actually do care (which is extremely rare in this day and time)
This is in no way a complete list, just some of the things God put on my heart as I was typing this. The biggest thing that I didn't even put on the list is the fact that GOD hasn't given up on me yet. He still sees some potential under it all.

The hard core Scuba Mermaids

From Cozumel Dec 2008 1

To me, it is so cool when I find something that I really like doing and my wife does also. Typically this is not that easy to do because as I get older, I realize that GOD has a sense of humor because he put 2 opposites together with us. Scuba diving is fast becoming one of my favorite things to do because she actually enjoys it too. This is a photo of her and Juleah at about 70 feet below the surface. We nicknamed them the "hard core scuba chicks" but mermaids has a better ring to it.

"ACE HIGH" aka Rod Brooks

From Murder Mystery Dinner Party

I still can't look at this picture and keep a straight face. I even went as far as to put it on my phone so that when he calls, it pops up on my phone.
I think in most men's lives, they have a very small number of men that they look up to and respect not only as a friend but as a fellow believer and that they truly trust. This guy (as funny as he looks in this picture) is the REAL DEAL !

Our first Murder Mystery Dinner Party

From Murder Mystery Dinner Party

We got invited to Rod and Juleah's annual Murder Mystery Party and we had a blast. Here is a picture I took of all those that were at it with there costumes and all. It is so cool having great christian friends to be able to hang out with and have fun. I'm already looking forward to the next one Juleah puts on.

Open Water Dive Certification

From Cozumel Oct. 2008 2

Here we are with our instructor after we finished our last dive for our Open Water Dive Certification. Pictured from left to right: Chance, Raul (our dive instructor), my amazing wife, and me. Now we just need to get our Advanced Open Water Certification next. This was such a cool trip and fun new thing to learn. Cozumel has the clearest water I have ever seen, 200 feet of visability.

The Cozumel scuba crew!

From Cozumel Oct. 2008 2

Pictured from left to right is: Chance Parker, Rod Brooks, Juleah Brooks, my amazing wife, and me. Our dive master took this picture for us while we were at 60 feet below the surface. Rod and Juleah were already certified and this was the last dive we had to do for our Open Water Certification. This has to be one of the top 5 things I have done in my life. I can't see how someone could actually get the privilege to do this and see all the beauty that is down there and not believe there is a God. The only problem with taking this trip and getting certified to scuba dive is that now we can't wait to go back!

Kirk Cameron interview about "Fireproof"

Last night we got together with some great friends of ours, Rod and Juleah Brooks and Dave and Melinda Adams and went to see "Fireproof". I had been looking forward to seeing this ever since my brother had told me about it. We always have such a great time together when we all go out. Never a dull moment with that bunch!

Always fun at the races

Here are a few pictures I took while we were at the Kansas Race this past weekend. We always enjoy our time there. The Legend's Mall across from the track has Brennen's favorite place to eat. It is called the T-Rex restaurant. As you can imagine, it is all about dinosaurs. This is the first year that we have gone that we did not have to borrow someone else's RV, we actually had our own this time. Was also a very good race.

Looking forward to seeing this movie

Great Leadership book

I just finished this secular leadership book by Marshall Goldsmith. I had seen that it had a lot of good reviews and I was not let down. For anyone wanting to take it to the next level, I would highly recommend it. It's not just a book for someone in a leadership role. For me, it helped me to see that alot of times, what usually is holding the organization back is not the employees but the leadership.
I love how God puts things in your life at just the right time and if you stay focused on him, he will give you the clarity to see through them. He used this book in this way with me. I have a good friend of mine that has this saying, "Thats not odd, thats GOD." God's perfect timing is always there, we just have to listen and look for it.

Celebrating 20 years!

On August 12th, Denise and I celebrated our 20th anniversary. The top picture here is the one that was put in the Poteau Daily Newspaper announcing our engagement back in 1988 (nice mullet). I was 20 and Denise was 19. The bottom picture was taken last November at Atlantis. I met Denise when I was 14 and she has been in my life ever since. To my brothers, she is like a sister to them because she has been around for so long. I have been trying to write this post ever since our anniversary but have not been able to put into words just how lucky and blest I feel to have shared over half of my life with her.

Update on Denise

Thought this would be the easiest way to let everyone know how Denise is doing. In case you didn't know, friday evening, Denise was starting dinner and went and lit our barbecue grill and came back inside to get the chicken ready. After giving the grill around 10 minutes or so to warm up, she went back outside to put the chicken breast on it. She noticed that the fire had gone out but knew that it had a full propane bottle on it. When she went to push the button to relight it, it basically exploded in her face. The grill we have is the kind you are suppose to keep the lid shut on when lighting but my guess is that the gas had built up in it and when she clicked button to relight it, all that gas ignited right in her face.
I was not at home so she got Brennen to call me so I rushed there and to make a long story short, we ended up going to the emergency room at Sparks to make sure she was okay and to get her checked out. At this point, it appears that the only physical damage she has is that her eyebrows and eyelashes are burnt off, or most of them anyways, and she has 1st. degree burns on her face, chest, arm and neck area. She lost quite a bit of hair also but luckily she already had quite a bit. The doctor gave her some medicine for the pain and a tetnis shot (don't think I spelled that right) and told her to keep the ointment that we had already got on the burns and it would just take time.
Thanks to everyone that has been praying for her and continue to keep her in your prayers. She was very fortunate that it was not any worse than it was.

I don't understand you?????

Pete Wilson from Cross Point church in Nashville posted this video up on his blog today and I thought it was so true in how men and women communicate at times. This has always been an area that I struggle with with my wife. I hope you think it is as funny as Brennen and I did.

I'm so blest

Today we had a great day on the beach and just spending "family" time together. I couldn't help but think of how blest I am with my wife and son. I am so bad about getting busy with the things of life and taking for granted how God has truly blest my life.

Found a new home (for now)!

Pretty excited about our new home for now for Fuelchurch. We have our first service this Sunday at the Poteau Civic Center. We are also going to be able to have one service, at least until we fill that one up. If you haven't been yet, this would be the perfect time to come check it out and see what you think. It starts at 10:00am

Already running out of room again. Trying to figure out how to make room for the Champion Bass Boats and Bentley pontoon boats. It never fails, as soon as we finish up a remodel, we realize that we need more room.

Father's Day with dad

Got to spend some time with my dad for Father's Day. My grandfather was even there. Was fun just getting to visit with them and my brothers and their families. It made me very thankful that I still have my dad and my grandfather to be able to spend time with. My grandfather got away before I could get any pictures with him.

Short video of Memorial Day weekend

memorial 2 from Brent on Vimeo.
This is just a short video while we were on Rod's boat. Quality is not that great. It shows Dave surfing behind the boat and then it shows Rod wakeboarding with Luke standing on the board with him. That was so cool to see that.

Thanks for the memories!

This is the Brooks family that so graciously let us hang out with them over Memorial weekend at Lake Tenkiller. They are some great friends of ours that we enjoy getting to do stuff with. Its hard to find really true friends like they are so we jump at every chance to get to do stuff with them. Plus they are into doing really fun stuff so there is never a dull moment when we get together with them.

The kids on Memorial Day

We had such a blast with our friends Memorial Day weekend at Tenkiller. Rod has this huge tube to pull alot of people in also when they get tired of wakeboarding or the water is too rough. I think Brennen would have rode around in this thing all day all weekend if we would have let him.

Lakehouse at Tenkiller

We had the best time hanging out with some great friends of ours over Memorial Day weekend. This is the lakehouse of Rod's moms that we stayed at with them. The view from the deck on the second floor overlooks the lake and is a beautiful view. It was a very fun and relaxing weekend just getting to be around some really great friend of ours. The kids all had a blast on Rod's wakeboard boat and I think we all ate too much while we were there. I am already looking forward to the next time we get to go with them.

In an instant

It seems that more and more here lately, God is revealing to me how precious life is and how quickly it can be taken away. My brother Brad who has the construction company in Fort Smith, had a crew working on the Fort Smith convention center this past weekend. There was nothing unusual about the task that they were doing. The building had sustained hail damage and they were hired to come fix the damage it had done to the exterior finish. Later that day he received a phone call from the police department letting him know an accident had happened. There were two guys in a basket that was attached to a forklift type of device and they were up in it working on the side of the building. Apparently, one of the guys was leaning out of the basket and did not have his safety harness on and the guy operating the lift went to move it and it moved too quickly and one of the men fell from the basket. In an instant, what was a normal ordinary day, turned into tragedy.

The man's name was Estaban and I had worked with him before opening up the dealership. He had fallen roughly 20 feet and landed on his head shattering his skull and breaking his back in 2 places. They rushed him to Sparks but he was not able to recover and no vital signs ever came back for him. They had to disconnect him from the machine that was keeping him alive Monday, May 19. 2008 at 9:20pm. He was 37 years old and a father of 4 children and was married.

We wake up each morning and just assume that our day will be just like the one before. This guy was working on this day but was planning on taking his family to the Air show the next day to just enjoy the day with them. Please lift his family up in your prayers. Also please be praying for my brother in this loss also. I know Brad and him were close and there kids were similar in age. Its events like this that make you realize how precious each day and each moment is.

Miss this condo and summer vacation

This was the condo that we used to stay at in Perdido Key, Florida every summer. It belonged to my mom and stepdad. We would always take our last vacation of the summer there before school started back. When Hurrican Ivan came in 2004, it wiped it out and they lost it and alot of the personal belongings that were kept there. We have missed finishing up our summers there every year since. We have not been back since 2004. This picture is was taken from me standing right at the ocean's edge, thats how close it was to the water.

One of my favorite pictures

This still has to be one of my favorite pictures of Denise and Brennen. Was just thinking about Mother's Day this morning and how special of a day that is. If you really think about it, we, as parents, have a very small window of time given to us to make an impact in the life of our children. Those years though, are so crucial in the development of who that child becomes and how they see the world. That responsibility to me at times can be very overwhelming and scary. Denise and I both know that his future rest in our hands and how we develop him as a young man and what values we help him to establish in his life, are based on what he learns now.

Thinking about Mother's Day

Can you ever really thank your mom for all that she has done for you over the years? They do so much for so little in return. As I think about this upcoming Mother's Day, I can't help but think about the people that I know that don't have there mother's still with them. As I watch Denise and Brennen interact with each other, there is something there that can never be replaced or duplicated by dad. The depth of there conversations, the bond that they have, and the trust in each other for safety and protection. It makes me realize why when you see star athletes interviewed on tv, you hear them say "hi mom" instead of "hi dad". O I am sure they love there dads too, but there is a certain bond that only a mom and a child can have.

I think about all the sacrifices that a mom must make for her children. And how giving they have to be and how they have to deny themselves of so much. To all the moms on this upcoming Mother's Day, thank you for being there, thank you for loving so unconditionally, thank you for being Mom. To Denise, thank you for being such an amazing mom to our son, you are molding him into a very passionate and Godly young man. And to mom, thank you so much mom for all you did and all that you continue to do for me, in prayer and in life.

Just stop and think (repost)

Shane, our lead pastor at fuelchurch, had posted this video on his blog about a month or so ago and I just remembered how impactful it was. How we get so busy and sometimes we just need to slow down and think, and realize what an awesome GOD we have and what a wonderful world we live in. Don't get so caught up in doing life that you miss all of its beauty that God created for us.

Incredible and moving story

At fuelchurch this week, Shane's message was about suffering. It was such a timely message for me in relating to the passing of Rod's mom Sharon. The following video was so moving and sums up so perfectly what Shane was talking about Sunday. The video is divided into 3 sections, sorry it is so long, but it is something that is worth the time. It is a story about a couple named Todd and Angie and their baby girl, Audrey.

Here is your warning though, this video will cause you to live differently. You will hug your kids differently. You will love your spouse differently. You will trust GOD differently.

Capturing those moments

Even after writing my previous post I found myself just out of habit going home and being somewhat selfish with my time. Brennen had gotten in trouble at school the day before and he was excited today because the teacher sent him home with a note about how good of a day he had had. He had been punished and was not allowed to watch tv or play on the computer or video games so he wanted all my attention. At first I gave it to him then I just wanted to relax and watch a few shows I had recorded. He in turn wanted to watch a movie with me that I was not all that interested in. After much negotiation, he got his way and the end result was a good one.
It just made me think about what this picture represents and how it seems like that was taken just a short time ago. He was 2 then, now he is 10. Those 8 years I can never get back with him and I cannot make up for all the moments that I let slip away.

Reflections

With the passing of Rod's mother Sharon, it has made me think and reflect on all the small moments in life that I am so bad about taking for granted. I think about how often I work for that extra hour or don't spend that 30 minutes playing with my son and tell him I have had a long day and just need to rest for a little bit. I am so blessed to still have both of my parents living and one of my grandparents. As I look at myself and examine all the things around me, I realize that the one person that I have really been unfair to is my incredible wife that I have been married to for soon to be 20 years in August. My parents did what I think was an amazing job of raising me and teaching me what I needed to know growing up and making sure that Godly principals and values were established in my life from a very early age. But, you reach a point in your life to where the influence they have on you is released and that is past on to the person you spend the rest of your life with.

I have been so blessed to have Denise there with me as I have grown and attempted to mature in my adult life, from running a construction company with my brother and my dad to venturing out into the unknown in opening up a motorcycle dealership. She has been there propping me up and helping me to have the confidence I needed to be able to do it. In that growth process though for me, she has made many sacrifices and I have cheated her out of those moments that are so simple but yet so important to her.

I know that right now Rod is searching and trying to find God in the passing of his mother and that huge loss that he is feeling right now. I will miss her dearly because she was a very special lady. What it has done in my life is made me realize how important that simple little phone call to my parents can be, something that seems like no big deal to me could be a huge deal to them. That I need to grab on to those small moments with my son, right now I am still pretty cool in his eyes but I know those days are numbered as he gets closer to his teenage years, I realize I need to treasure these times. And for my wife, how blest I am to have someone that still loves me, even after knowing all my flaws and imperfections, because there are many, has helped me become a better person because of all the many values she has, have wore off on me in my areas of weekness. These things are what I grab onto in this time and this is what Sharon going to heaven has done in my life.

One of those moments in life that I don't understand

I normally don't use my blog for things like this but this family is so dear to me and my family. God has chosen for reasons I don't fully understand or comprehend not to heal this wonderful lady. Her name is Sharon and she is the mother of Rod Brooks, one of my very close friends. The family got some very sad news yesterday telling them there was nothing more they could do for her. This is so close to me emotionally because my mother and my family went through a similar situation and God chose a different path for the resolution of it. Sharon reminds me so much of my mom too, and I think that is another reason why I hurt so much for them right now. I know God has his reasons for how he works things out but that still doesn't make it easy to understand. This is one of the many questions that I have on a list to ask him when I finally meet him one day. Until that day though, I just have to put my faith and strength in him and know that he is in control and he works all things for good, it is just extremely hard in these difficult times to see that good, which forces me to lean on him even more for that strength.

Rod, Juleah, Luke, Ava, we love you guys so very much and wish there was some way we could remove some of the hurt you are feeling in these times you are in right now and the times ahead, we just continue to pray that God gives you the strength you need and the comfort that comes from knowing he will never leave you or forsake you. It is in times like this that Phillipians 4:13 has to be used over and over and over.

And for anyone else that follows my blog, please be in prayer for them. They are an incredible family that loves God and serves God and are facing a very difficult time right now.

My little man at his 4th grade track meet

Wow, was nice and warm watching these guys have there track meet. Unfortunately for my son, he is not the most athletic little guy, probably alot of that is thanks to me. One thing about it though is that he always has a great spirit about it. I think he gets to thinking he is one of his video game characters when he is running too.

Reasons why so many casualties on the bike ride

Thought I would post up a picture of just some of the stuff we are riding through on these rides. Yep, that looks nice and casual, according to Josh anyways. Awesome exercise though but man, killer trails. I guess if I keep going with them, I have to get me one of those cool red shirts and fancy bike shorts.

The latest Fuelchurch mountain bike ride (casual??)

Heres a picture of the gang that went on this ride. This one was anything but casual. It was a 3 hour ride and we had plenty of wrecks and casualties along the way. It was a great time of fellowship and giving each other a hard time. I got mine out of the way right off the bat. As soon as we got off the pavement and hit the trails, I wiped out on the first creek crossing. I am going to feel it tomorrow.

Texas Sprint cup race April 2008

Took a few picture of the Sunday race, mainly the crowd and the other rv's and fans. Jeff had the worst race I have ever seen him have. He finished 43rd out of 43. Can't get much worse than that. The weather for this race ended up being nice also. Was a really pretty day. Carl Edwards ended up running away with it and Jimmy Johnson ended up coming in 2nd. Jeff and his team need to figure out what Jimmy and his team did, they were complete opposites for this race. Jr. ended up fading towards the end of the race also.

Texas Nationwide Race April 2008

Took a few pictures of the race Saturday at Texas. The weather was super nice, just enough breeze to keep it from being really hot. Only had 3 or 4 cautions so it went by really fast. Kyle Bush ended up winning it and Jr. finished 7th. Wasn't as crowded as it usually is.

Thought this was a great interview with Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church

Mark is one of the pastors that I follow and listen to his podcast all the time. His church is in Seattle, Washington which is far far away from the Bible Belt. It's very enlightening to me to get to listen to pastors from areas outside of where I live to hear how they have to approach sin in a different way than we are used to in our part of the world where christianity is more popular.

Fuelchurch first "casual" mountain bike ride

We had our first Fuelchurch mountain bike ride and this is just one of the casualties from it. Josh sent out an email to everyone inviting them to a "casual" mountain bike ride. It was anything but casual. Josh ended up braking his derailer and Matt(seen here being pushed) broke his chain. It was however a great time of fellowship and fun with other men that enjoy mountain biking. There were 9 guys that showed up for it. We rode back back in the ABM addition on some old horse trails and motorcycle trails, it was pretty hard core.

These are a few pictures that I took at Brennen's birthday party.

Brennen's 10th birthday party

Brennen's 10th birthday party from Brent on Vimeo.
We invited everyone over to the house to celebrate Brennen's 10th. birthday party on Saturday. His birthday is not until the 19th. but we wanted to do it on the weekend so it would be easier for everyone to be able to come. Dad and Pam were not able to come and neither was Brock, Amy and Parker. Ashleigh, Emily, McKinzie, and Haley were also not able to come. This is just a short video of Brennen with his cake and opening some of his presents. I still can't believe he is going to be 10 years old.

Easter 2007 (wow, that went fast) last year!

I cannot believe that Easter is almost here again. Just seems like the other day we were doing Easter in 2007. We took this picture at Mom and Eauls house in Lavaca and my little boy is not such a little boy anymore. Next week we celebrate his 10th. birthday which still blows me away thinking he has been here that long. I guess the old saying is true, the older you get, the faster time flies.

Happy dad and his boys

My dad (pictured here in the middle of all of us) just recently had a stroke. This has made me just slow down a little and start thinking about the important things in life. I used to work with him side by side everyday and looking back, I really didn't realize how lucky I was to have that with him. He taught me alot about character, values, and raised me in a christian environment which helped to mold me into the person I became. For a man that was raised by a father that wasn't very loving, I think he did a great job with all three of us.
